I remember you

Do you remember that night near Folsom?
last-minute invite, you're the reason I came over
kicked off the night with a kiss to the temple
it was wintertime, and you were growing a beard
brown and quilly like a porcupine
holiday lights like a million tiny pulsars
red and green and gold and blue; reflected off a Pontiac
Echo and the Bunnymen, 'Killing Moon' was playing
I mouthed the words 'unwillingly mine'
you sat in a chair, distracted,
overthinking made you anxious,
"what's the worst that could happen if you were honest?"
another bottle offered
pins and needles could not walk
it was two weeks before Christmas when I spoke the word solace
it created clouds of white
tiny droplets of the left behind
if there was a space for silence you took it
teeth full of solecisms, I lamented
amber-golden glass
the night is over when we say it
made it home, I rested
even a night like this is half-forgotten
under blankets, hot and floating
you had a few words about Washington
but I lost them, drifted into softness
like a season, a transition into something else
but I never tire of anything about you.
